Join us for a horticultural workshop hosted by the St-Croix District of the Garden Club Federation of Maine.  The workshop will focus on table designs.

Hank Tyler, an internationally known sculptor from Hallowell, will demonstrate his sculpture techniques in a workshop format. Tyler sculpts in hardwoods – Black Walnut, Bubinga wood from Africa, Brazilian Rosewood, and Osage Orange. The wood is finely sanded to show the grain pattern and is finished with Tung oil. Water and oceanic birds are Tyler’s preferred subject matter with sandpipers being of special interest and the bulk of his current work.

Tyler will explain his approach to bird sculpture and design, as well as, technique. Participants will have an opportunity to use chisels, rasps, riffles, scrapers and sandpaper. Participants are encouraged to ask questions. The workshop’s approach will be to encourage give and take with questions welcome throughout the workshop. Participants who are sculptors or carvers are encouraged to bring examples of their works

A number of Tyler’s finished sculptures and works in progress will be at the workshop for participants to critique and take notes for their own sculptures.

Tyler’s sculptures are currently on display at the Wendell Gilley Museum in Southwest Harbor, and The Gallery at Frenchman’s Bay in Somesville.  Participants are encouraged to go see the sculptures prior to the workshop.
